Hire a Helper Day

Hire a Helper Day

Year 6 hire-a-helper day

Hire-a-helper day is an opportunity for year 6 students to give back to the other students in the school. They offer themselves at auction to be helpers for the day. They are asked to be positive and selfless in ensuring that their “hirers” are given a happy, enjoyable day. As stage 3 teachers, we approach this day as an opportunity to develop a sense of community and citizenship within our year 6 students. It is a practical example of our school motto Strive to Serve.

As is to be expected, all activities undertaken on the day have to fit in with school rules and Year 6 students will say a polite “No” to any requests which make them feel uncomfortable or self-conscious.

While some students in Year 6 will be a little nervous about the auction process, please be aware that we go to great lengths to ensure that students have a great day. Some students with particular needs or concerns are hired out before the bidding and some students may only be hired out to certain grades or only to teachers. Some students are being auctioned in pairs, others as individuals. Some students have chosen not to be hired at all which we are okay with. A stage 3 teacher is always available during the day to assist Year 6 students if they are having difficulties with their hirer. All students will receive bids on the day, either from students or teachers. No student will be left standing at auction without bids. In short, the welfare of students is considered both before, and during the day itself. These issues and more have been discussed with the Year 6 group, who are looking forward to the day.

Your child, as an individual or part of a group, will be able to hire a Year 6 student for the day to help them in the classroom and playground with work, jobs, outdoor activities and other fun tasks. Students hire helpers at a morning auction, with teachers assisting younger students during the process.

While it is always difficult to say in advance how much money will be needed to hire a helper (due to the auction process) a sensible amount of money for a child to bring to school would be $2-$10. Students can then combine their money with others for higher bids. Usually only group bids result in the successful hiring of a helper.

All money raised will be used by Year 6 for their end of year gift to the school and to subsidise the Year 6 dinner.
